Poon Li-Wei explores Sri Lanka beyond its sun-kissed beaches on a journey that feeds the soul.
Famed for golden sands that stretch for miles and crystal clear waters, especially in the area of Galle, my trip to Sri Lanka this round, courtesy of Dilmah Tea in a bid to understand the art of tea better, revealed another side to the country that had, not too long ago, stepped out of the shadows of a civil war.
THE MJF FOUNDATION
Named after Merrill J Fernando, the founder of Dilmah Tea (a portmanteau of his son’s names, Dilhan and Malik), there are a total of 17 MJF centres scattered around Sri Lanka – especially in B- and C-grade school areas. What this means is that poverty is exceptionally high there and the children are in incredible need of help in search of a better life. Visiting one of the largest centres they have in Moratuwa – it’s eye-opening how what was once a clothing factory 12 years ago is today, a space where every inch is utilised to help keep youths off the streets. Whether it’s via vocational classes, the Cricket Live Foundation that may mould the next generation of national players, or free therapy sessions for disabled children – the efforts to fulfil these kids’ potential are nothing short of astounding. And it’s not just children who are taken care of, as women here are taught culinary and sewing skills so that they might earn a better living without having to leave home (most of them don’t have jobs as they have to take care of their children).
