Baby Onboard Abroad

We look at just a few of the issues that you need to consider if you travel or live outside the jurisdiction when pregnant.
Baby Onboard Abroad

Whether it’s planned or not, having a baby abroad can end up being a much more bureaucratic time than if the baby was born in Ireland, particularly where you want the baby to have an Irish passport, and in cases where your stay abroad is temporary. We look at just a few of the issues that you need to consider if you travel or live outside the jurisdiction when pregnant.

Maternity Benefit

If you decide to travel before or during your maternity leave, it is important that you are aware that you are not entitled to be paid Maternity Benefit for any period that you spend outside of the EU. Therefore, if you have your baby whilst outside of the EU, or opt to leave the EU for any part of your Maternity Leave, you will not be entitled to receive any Maternity Benefit payments until you return home, regardless of your previous intentions. You are required to inform the Maternity Benefit Section in Donegal if you intend to travel outside of a Member State for any time during your benefit period.
