AMERICA FERRERA once considered leaving acting for activism, when she was 17 years old and her debut film, Real Women Have Curves, was about to become the hit of the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. But a USC professor convinced her that her work and political action could co-exist. Now 32, Ferrera directed a recent episode of Superstore about an undocumented worker. Maria Elena Fernandez spoke to her about evolving into one of the country’s most visible—and vocal—Latina actresses.
On Superstore, you play Amy, an unhappy employee at a bigbox store. For your directorial debut, did you get to pick which episode to direct?
No. It was all about scheduling. It was whatever episode was coming after our hiatus week.
Yet it was an appropriate subject for you.
