‘Superstition is any belief or practice that is considered irrational or supernatural: for example, if it arises from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a positive belief in fate or magic, or fear of that which is unknown. It is commonly applied to beliefs and practices surrounding luck, prophecy, and certain spiritual beings, particularly the belief that future events can be foretold by specific unrelated prior events.’
Damn, the internet just labelled me irrational, ignorant and scared of the unknown. Hold on, fuck those internet dudes! No wonder mental health is declining in the internet age, it’s worse than the free tests the Scientologists offer. Luckily for my sanity, school, science and even that wonderful thing we know as experience, taught me that superstition is about as real as say, an MTB forum without douchebags who’ve never ridden hard in their life sprouting opinions. So, when a little thought in my mind began to bug me on the trail a few years back, my only conclusion was that this was possibly a superstition. And the fact that I was becoming the walking contradiction I’d tried in vain to rebel against for so many years. I mean, really? At my age, believing in a superstition was A/ like becoming born again (insert whatever religion offers it’s services for such lost souls), and B/ I must be running away from something?
