Visit Britain’s largest farmer’s market, follow in Keats’s footsteps or go in search of Arthurian legend in England’s vibrant former capital

Winchester

Winchester may be one of Britain’s smallest cities, but it was once the capital of England, no less. In 871 Alfred the Great was crowned King of Wessex and established Winchester as his capital, but by the 14th century it had lost its power and status. The city never recovered from a fire in 1141, and soon London took over as capital.

Although Winchester has not grown much over the years, what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm. The perfect blend of city and countryside, its rich history, lively culture and natural beauty make it an ideal choice for a day-trip or weekend away.

The city is most famous for its cathedral. It was originally built in 642 AD, though the current church dates back to the 11th century. It is the longest Gothic cathedral in Europe, with the longest nave at 556 feet.
