After a round of drinks, girls’ night was in full swing.

‘Cheers!’ I smiled, clinking glasses with my workmates.

It was a Friday night in August 2014, and we were celebrating the end of another week in our HR department.

As a single woman in my 30s, I loved going out, visiting cocktail bars in my home town of Austin, Texas.

‘I’m just nipping to the loo,’ I said to my mates.

In the bathroom, as I looked in the mirror, something caught my eye.

My nose had suddenly appeared to be bigger... it looked swollen as if I’d been hit.

Odd, I thought.

After a few more drinks, I’d forgotten all about it, but the next morning, I woke with a hangover – and a painful nose.

Looking in the mirror, I gasped in horror.

My nose looked huge. The skin around it had grown thick and looked red and bulbous.

As a teen, I’d broken my nose playing sport, and in 2008, I’d had surgery to correct it.

Could this be caused by that surgery? I thought.

My GP didn’t seem worried, but over the next few weeks, it had doubled in size.
