Delivering actionable intelligence for precision agriculture.
As a commercial drone operator looking for additional work, precision agriculture is a potential revenue stream with nearly unlimited potential. Crops are literally everywhere. The driest state in the nation, Nevada, has nearly six million acres in production, yielding a harvest of $600 million each year.
If you’re anything like us here at the Roswell Flight Test Crew, however, agriculture has always seemed like a fraught proposition: It requires specialized, expensive sensors and relies on arcane types of analysis, like Normalized Diff erence Vegetation Index (NDVI)— whatever that means. My perception started to change when I met Dr. Gregory Crutsinger and he showed me how to do precision-agriculture work with my existing fl eet of drones. Together, we headed out to the Oregon wine country and spent a couple of days fl ying over vineyards, and for the very fi rst time, I really began to understand the true potential of drones in this industry.

Windracers Mail Delivery
With its partner Windracers Ltd., Royal Mail has become the first UK parcel carrier to deliver mail to a UK island in a 70-mile, beyond-line-of-sight, autonomous flight to the Scilly Isles. Tasked to better connect the islands’ remote communities, a consortium including Royal Mail, Windracers Ltd., DronePrep, University of Southampton, Excalibur Healthcare Services, and Consortiq Limited is funded by UK Research and Innovation.
Counting Penguins
Counting penguins is harder than it sounds. With freezing rain, snow, and chilling winds that limit the flight windows for the surveys, it takes scientists using three full days to map the location of 300,000 nesting pairs of Adélie penguins on Antarctica’s Cape Crozier.

UAS TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT The Key to the Future of Drones
In 2012, Congress passed the FAA Modernization and Reform Act, which established a deadline for the agency: achieve full integration of drones into the airspace by 2015. As the calendar rolls over into 2021, this begs an obvious question: “Are we there yet?”
