Steve Skuce is the former chairman of The Grayling Society and author of the excellent book Grayling Flies. Here he shares his top autumn grayling patterns.
Ah, autumn is with us and winter just around the corner, so now is the prime time for some grayling fishing.
As the days shorten and the weather turns colder grayling tend to do two things – shoal up and go deeper. This is when the nymph comes into its own.
Dependent on where you fish, you might need to go ultra-heavy with your nymphs just to get down to where the fish are feeding.
Once you get there, however, your choice of pattern is probably not too important and we grayling anglers will use classic upstream Czech or French nymphing techniques, depending on circumstances and our own inclinations, to present the flies in as enticing a manner as possible.
