ANDY O’Brien was the difference maker in this game as Derry fell to their second defeat in succession.
After a hammering at the hands of Meath, Collie McGurk’s team faced a Wicklow team sitting pretty at the top of the Division 2B table. The Oak Leafers made a good start to go three points up but an O’Brien goal on 12 minutes set the visitors on their way to a comfortable victory.
Derry dominance
Three minutes in Brian Og Magilligan did well to touch the ball down for Aaron Kelly to collect and swing over the bar and that was quickly followed by a Ruairi Convery free. Both teams were finding it difficult in the early stages with soft ground underfoot preventing the ball from running smoothly. The home side were three up moments later when Odhran McKeever’s shot kept inside the left upright. Wicklow then got their first score on the board through midfielder Ronan Keddy before Derry had a big goal chance as the game approached ten minutes but neither Gavin McCormick nor Kelly could convert and in the end Convery settled for the point.
