Indian Army's Communication Modernisation Needs to Speed Up

Wars in the future will be primarily fought in the electronic domain. Electronic warfare (EW) plays both strategic and tactical role in any modern military operation. These assets are employed for supportive, protective and offensive measures.

The Indian Army has to maintain a high level of readiness for war in varied terrain conditions and should have the capability to operate in the complete spectrum of conflict. For this, a robust communication network that can take care of command and control through information, data, image and video sharing is imperative.

Information Warfare consists of command and control, intelligence and counter-intelligence, electronic warfare, psychological warfare, cyber warfare, economic information warfare and network centric warfare. This area of warfare has emerged as a major force multiplier and is at the heart of Information, Communication and Technology or ICT-driven revolution in military affairs (RMA). This seems to be the weak point in Indian Army's arsenal, demanding immediate and focused attention.
