Frisky alliance partners spar with the BJP in a game of identity politics
The three constituents of Goa’s ruling coalition are at loggerheads over a rather curious issue—the installation of statues to honour their preferred icons. It all started with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) demanding a statue of Jack Sequeira, who was instrumental in preventing Goa’s merger with Maharashtra back in 1967, in the state assembly complex. And while Congress MLAs supported the move, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party wanted a statue of socialist icon Ram Manohar Lohia instead. Not to be left behind, the BJP legislators said it ought to be none other than their beloved Chhatrapati Shivaji.
