Even as the protests against the citizenship law by women and students continue in various parts of the country, the perilous state of the economy has been highlighted by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) chief economist, Gita Gopinath, who put India’s growth rate at 4.8 per cent.
Not only that, she said that the slump in India is dragging down the world economy. Rarely has the Narendra Modi government, which claims to be taking the country towards a $ 5 trillion dollar economy and which was rated by the IMF itself last year as the fastest growing economy in the world, witnessed such a drastic scaling down of its prospects.
It is not only in the economic field that India is perceived to be faltering. With regards to democracy, too, which has been a source of pride for India in a region of communist, army-dominated and theocratic countries, India has gone down 10 places in a democratic index of The Economist Intelligence Unit.
The reason for the decline is the “erosion of civil liberties”, which takes into account the clampdown on Kashmir, where three former chief ministers and a number of political activists are under detention. The Economist’s latest issue has accused Narendra Modi of “sowing division” in the country.
