The groundwork for the establishment of Northeast’s first de-addiction Centre for youths has been completed and it will be set up in Meghalaya's New Shillong Township.
Meghalaya social welfare minister Kyrmen Shylla laid the foundation for this deaddiction centre, which will be run by the KRIPA Foundation through the PPP model with the state's Social Welfare Department,
The de-addiction centre aims to reach out to a large number of children and adolescents in the community, thereby focusing on the guidelines to attain proper interventions and risks.
More NGOs and other organisations working for the cause of de-addiction in the state should unite together and reach out to the most affected districts that possess no facilities, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation of substance and drug users, Shylla said.
This de-addiction centre in Meghalaya is important from the northeast perspective as the region, over the years, has been prone to drug addiction.
We have witnessed a rise in the cases of drug and alcohol abuse in many parts of the northeast, It was high time for such a centre, said Benjamin Sangma, a resident of Shillong.
Sangma lost his brother to drug abuse and since then it has been his mission to contribute his bit to society against substance abuse.
