A few young, music-savvy Ladakhis have come out with the regions first EDM album.
Faisal Khan Ashoor is no overnight viral sensation, but his trajectory to local stardom is not an uncommon one among the smartphone-toting generation. A college student, very aware of his singing and music-making skills, records his voice with that typical do-it-yourself ethos of YouTube, and is suddenly in the limelight.
But Ashoor, 22, is an internet success in Ladakh, a sparsely populated and geographically remote region of Jammu and Kashmir. A Balti from the border village of Turtuk, which was annexed by India during the India-Pakistan war of 1971, Ashoor effortlessly projects his collegiate good looks, and heart-on-sleeve, troubadour-like aura in his syrupy music videos.
