Boris Johnson might ditch the role of his anti-sleaze chief after Lord Geidt quit, over a steel tariffs row.

The peer – who accused the PM of plotting a “deliberate” breach of the Ministerial Code – is the second person to resign as Mr Johnson’s ethics adviser in his fewer than three years as Prime Minister. In a searing resignation letter, Lord Geidt said that the Premier put him in an “impossible and odious” position.

The row apparently centred on plans for tariffs on Chinese steel which may break World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.
