Rwanda Plan: Is Euro Court Backing Down?

IN a vindication for the British Government, European judges are on the brink of backing down over their ruling preventing asylum seekers being sent to Rwanda.

Progress has been made during discussions with chiefs at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg about the process known as Rule 39 that allowed judges to deport flights last year.

Home Secretary halt Suella Braverman was in Rwanda at the weekend where she called it a "blessing" that migrants could seek refuge there.

Speaking in Kigali, she said: "The Government has been clear that the opaque Strasbourg process which led to the last-minute grounding of our Rwanda flight with a Rule 39 order last year was deeply flawed.

"That's why we have measures in our Bill that will address how the UK intends to comply with such orders in the future.

"But I've been encouraged by the Government's constructive recent discussions with Strasbourg, including around possible reforms to Rule 39 procedures, which is obviously something we'd like to see."

Ms Braverman spent the two-day visit touring long-term migrant accommodations and learning about the education and employment support that would be available to migrants.

She said: "I would call it a blessing. I've met refugees from several countries here who are enormously grateful for the sanctuary that Rwanda has provided - education opportunities, security, a home and opportunity in the future.

"Coming to Rwanda, being resettled to Rwanda will provide these vulnerable people with a prosperous future."
