The British No.1 made it to round three for the fourth time in New York after Marcos Giron had threatened to derail his Flushing Meadows bid.

Evans was cruising at two sets up before losing the third, only to then hear Petchey’s courtside analysis pointing out he needed only one more set and it didn’t matter how, or when, he got it.

That was all the encouragement needed as the No.24 seed closed out a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-3 win that sets up a last-32 clash with unseeded Aussie Alexei Popyrin.
