A MOTHER'S identical twins were saved when they underwent extraordinary laser surgery in the womb.
Nichola Luther's baby boys were found to be suffering from a rare condition that deprives one of red blood cells and gives the other more than needed, causing potentially fatal heart problems.
Doctors at St George's hospital in Tooting inserted a camera into her womb and used a laser to seal off the blood vessels that were allowing blood to leak from one baby to the other. Mrs. Luther was awake but anesthetized during the 90-minute procedure. Both babies, who were only at 25 weeks gestation, were also anesthetized.
