Smollett’s lies were exposed when police tracked down the two men he had accused of carrying out the attack, and they revealed how the actor had hired them to stage it all.
At court in Chicago, Judge James Linn ordered Smollett to serve 150 days at Cook County prison as part of a 30-month probation sentence, and ordered him to pay $120,106 (£92,000) in restitution to the city of Chicago and a $25,000 (£19,000) fine.
In response to the sentence, Smollett quietly told the judge “I would like to say to your honour I am not suicidal”, repeating it three times and declaring: “I’m innocent.”
