Dublin captain Sinead Aherne insists that funding of women’s sport must at least match that of men’s before on-field comparisons can be made.
Aherne cited the Government grants scheme that is in place for inter-county players across all codes though there is a significant disparity between what is afforded to either gender.
The men’s scheme totalled €3m for 2019, working out at around €2,400 for a player whose county goes all the way to the All-Ireland final.
In ladies football and camogie, €10,500 is afforded to All-Ireland finalists. Assuming that each panel contains 30 players, that’s €350 each – almost seven times less than their male counterparts.
Aherne said: “If you don’t invest in something, just like any business, if you don’t give it a platform to grow then how can it actually grow?
