At a time when India and China are locked in a tense confrontation, a Chinese company ‘Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co Ltd (STEC)’ has emerged as the lowest bidder for construction of an underground stretch of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System) project.
Given the high tempers and the call to boycott Chinese goods, the Chinese company's success in becoming eligible for an over Rs 1,000 crore project is set to raise a political storm.
Even before the Opposition could train its guns on the government over the success of the Chinese bid, the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, has demanded the Narendra Modi government to cancel the bid.
The SJM, which has taken a strong antiChina position in the past, has now requested the government to cancel the company’s bid and promote an Indian player instead.
