Cyclone Biparjoy over the Arabian Sea has the potential to wreak extensive damage, the official weather office said, as it heads for landfall on the Gujarat coast on Thursday. The Gujarat government has already evacuated thousands of people from danger zones, while the Centre has deployed rescue, relief, and healthcare teams in the state.
"The wind speed is picking up in Porbandar, Devbhumi Dwarka districts to Kachchh, and may go up to 65-75kmph on Wednesday," India Meteorological Department (IMD) director-general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said on Tuesday. "On Thursday, wind speed in Dwarka, Jamnagar, Kachchh, and Morbi districts of Gujarat will be around 125-135 km per hour (kmph) and gusting to 150 kmph, which could have extensive damaging potential."
The state administration has so far moved 21,000 people to temporary shelters and plans to evacuate people within 10 km of the coast. "The most affected areas, Devbhumi Dwarka, Kachchh, and Jamnagar, are expected to receive extreme rainfall of above 20 cm, which could lead to low-lying flooding," Mohapatra added. Biparjoy, classified as a very severe cyclonic storm, is expected to make landfall near the Jakhau port in Gujarat.
