Biden Attacks Trump's ‘Web Of Lies' On Anniversary Of Capitol Insurrection
The Guardian|January 07, 2022
President Joe Biden yesterday denounced his predecessor, Donald Trump, for spreading a “web of lies” about the legitimacy of the 2020 US election in a desperate attempt to cling to power, and for fomenting the violence that led his supporters to hold a “dagger at the throat of American democracy”.

Biden Attacks Trump's ‘Web Of Lies' On Anniversary Of Capitol Insurrection

Biden condemned Trump’s efforts as a “failed” pursuit, but one that continues to imperil American democracy a year after the 6 January insurrection at the US Capitol , when extremist supporters of the former president tried to overturn the official certification of Biden’s presidential election victory.

In a speech from the Capitol marking the first anniversary of the riot, Biden was unsparing in his assessment of the harm caused by Trump’s “undemocratic” and “un-American” attacks on the institutions of democracy.

Though Biden never mentioned Trump by name, he was explicit in assigning blame.

“For the first time in our history, the president had not just lost an election, he tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob reached the Capitol,” Biden said. “But they failed. They failed.”

And yet the falsehoods and conspiracies that were a precursor to the violence which left five people dead and more than 140 law enforcement officers injured still persisted, Biden said.
