New Delhi: Delhi recorded 1,796 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, the highest singleday spike in cases in 223 days. The test positivity rate also climbed to 2.4%, the highest since May 24.

The last time the national capital recorded a higher tally of fresh Covid cases in a single day was on May 22, nearly seven and half months ago, when 2,260 cases were logged with a positivity rate of 3.6%.

A total of 73,590 tests were carried out, including 62,812 RT-PCR/CBNAAT/True Nat tests and 10,778 rapid antigen tests, from which 1,796 returned positive results. The infection tally in the city now stands at 14,48,211 patients. Of this, over 14.18 lakh have recovered. No Covid fatality was reported on Friday and the toll remains static at 25,107.

Among the new infections were 57 cases of the Omicron variant, taking the total of that variant in the city to 320, of which 125 have recovered. Every fourth case of the new variant in the country is from Delhi.

In his New Year’s message on Friday, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “Your government is taking all necessary steps to curb the spread. I am personally looking after the preparations and am very concerned about every resident. We have to stop the spread of Covid together.” He once again urged people not to go out of their homes unnecessarily, always wear a mask and get both doses of the vaccine.

“I pray to God that our country and the whole world get freedom from the pandemic as soon as possible,” the CM said in his message.
