New Delhi: The risk of hospitalisation in patients infected with the Omicron variant is two-third of the risk posed by the Delta variant of novel coronavirus, a study conducted by the University of Edinburgh claims.
It is based on a comparative analysis of hospitalisations among people affected by Covid-19 from November 1 to December 19 in Scotland where both Delta and the Omicron variants are in circulation.
According to a working paper released online by researchers, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, 1,26,511 (0.67%) Covid-19 cases were caused by the Delta variant during the study period. Of them, 856 patients required hospitalisation. The number of Omicron patients during the same period was 23,840. Of this, only 15 (0.06%) required hospitalisation.
The researchers also found that the third/booster dose of vaccination offered substantial — 57% — additional protection against the risk of symptomatic Covid-19 for Omicron.
