Delhi recorded the sea-son’s longest fog spell and parts of the city experienced the coldest day conditions of this winter as the combined effect of cold northwesterly winds and low visibility made Friday severely bleak and chilly.
While Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 15.4 degrees Celsius, the second lowest of the season, several other city stations logged the lowest day temperatures of this winter. The maximum was just 11 degrees at Narela, 12.1 degrees at Jafarpur and 14.6 degrees at both Palam and the Ridge. The met department said foggy and “cold day” conditions are likely to continue on Saturday. The minimum was 6 degrees, one notch below normal.
At Safdarjung, the city’s base station, the visibility was consistent around 400 metres due to moderate fog throughout the day, Palam saw slightly better visibility only around 3.30pm in the afternoon. Met officials said high moisture in the air and cold winds across the northern plains were leading to the formation of fog, which had been largely absent so far this season.
