Bajrang Punia will return from Tokyo with a bronze, a medal he hadn’t originally set his sights on when flying out to Vladikavkaz city in Russia in late May to prepare for his debut Olympic Games. The aim was always to win gold. The way Bajrang’s campaign had shaped up, training with former and reigning Olympic and world champions in Russia, the 27-year-old from Haryana’s Sonepat had looked ready for top of the podium finish in Tokyo.
The men’s freestyle 65kg category is said to be the toughest in the wrestling competition and the reigning CWG and Asian Games champion has shown over the years why he’s considered among the best in his weight division. However, an untimely injury to his right knee, suffered during the Ali Aliyev invitational tournament in Moscow on June 25, threatened to derail his Olympics campaign. It pushed Bajrang out of the mat for nearly two weeks.
