Mumbai: No official numbers are available on pink slips and salary cuts in the academic sector, but as learning moves online, almost one in two teachers has suffered a pay cut during the pandemic, found a TOI survey of over 4,500 respondents employed in education. Of these, nearly 31% have had a pay cut of over 40%.
Overall, 11% respondents in the survey were let go during the lockdown. Most damaging of outcomes has been loss in teaching hours – almost two-thirds of teachers (59%) now spend barely 3 hours in lectures as against the pre-Covid norm of 3-6 hours in class. An overwhelming number (83%) are keen to get back to physical classrooms as soon as they reopen.
