Mumbai: It was a chance ride for India’s best rider Suraj Narredu and the wily saddle artist made the most of it by guiding Alluring Silver, a 20/1 shot, to an astounding victory in the Zavaray S Poonawalla Indian Turf Invitation Cup (Grade 1), feature of an historic day in Indian racing when five Grade 1 races were run on a single day at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Sunday.
English rider David Egan was assigned to ride the Pesi Shrofftrained filly but just before catching his flight from England to India on Friday evening, he was told that he cannot travel as one of his contacts had tested positive for Covid-19. Suraj was asked to guide Alluring Silver at the last minute as the Bangalore boy had no ride in that race.
“It is difficult to watch such a big race from the stands. But as luck would have it, I found myself in the thick of action and here I am with such a grand success,” Suraj told TOI. Suraj also won Sprinters’ Cup astride favourite Multifaceted.
