A little rain in Delhi on January 24, 1950 did notdampen the spirits of the members of the Constituent Assembly. Huddled together, in the Constitution (now Central) Hall of Parliament, they were anxiously waiting for assembly proceedings to begin at 11 am for the last time. There were two critical items on the day’s agenda. First was the election of the President of India. This one was momentous but straightforward because Dr Rajendra Prasad was the only candidate for the position. The second item was more personal. That day, each member would sign a document that would guide independent India’s destiny - the Constitution of India.
