Had told BMC not to lay red mud at Shivaji Park: Expert

Amid the controversy over BMC’s plan to construct a gravel-based ‘mud track’ in the middle of Dadar’s Shivaji Park, rainwater harvesting expert Nandan Mungekar, whom the corporation had consulted as a pro bono advisor, said that last year he had objected to red earth being laid on the parade path that runs through the open ground.

Mumbai: He said he had pointed out that laying of red earth in Shivaji Park, which has fine sandy soil, would in fact, prove to be disastrous and make the rainwater harvesting system redundant as the stormwater drains (SWD) would not function.

In July 2021, Mungekar had written a letter to assistant municipal commissioner, G-North ward, Kiran Dighavkar stating that no contractor had told him about laying a parade track with red earth in the middle of the open ground, and in fact, the mud track was not part of his designs.
