Washington: White House adviser Dr Anthony Fauci told a US Senate panel on Tuesday that New Delhi prematurely celebrated the end of the pandemic and let down its guard against a tricky virus, and that the US and the world should be alert to variants like the one that has surfaced in India.
“The reason that India is in such dire straits now is that they had an original surge and made the incorrect assumption that they were finished with it, and what happened, they opened up prematurely and wound up having a surge right now that we’re all very well aware of is extremely devastating,” Dr Fauci told the panel, warning, “One of the important things is don’t ever underestimate the situation.”
