New Delhi: After the West’s public appreciation of India’s renewed push for an end to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, the US is hoping New Delhi will back a resolution in the UN Security Council to condemn the referendums Russia is holding in Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine and also in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south.
The resolution, which is being introduced by the US and Albania, calls for not acknowledging the outcome of the referendums which, the West believes, will be used as a pretext by Russia to annex Ukrainian territory. Condemning Russia’s actions, the resolution also seeks complete withdrawal of its forces from Ukraine. What India does if the resolution is put to vote will be keenly watched by the West.
