New Delhi: Cases of Covid-19 saw a big jump in the city Tuesday, crossing the 1,000 mark, up from 614 a day earlier. According to the daily health bulletin of the state government, 1,118 new Covid cases and two deaths were reported. The positivity rate was 6.5%.
The last time Delhi recorded more than 1,000 Covid cases was on May 12 (1,032) with a positivity rate of 3.64% and no death. However, over the next few days, the number of cases had gradually fallen.
The seven-day average of daily cases a good indicator of trends began rising on June 6 after having fallen to a low of 346 on the previous day. The average has steadily risen since then and stood at 729 on Tuesday. On Monday, the city had recorded 614 new cases with only 8,700 tests being conducted Sunday.
It is believed the B.A.2 variant, which led to the Omicron surge in January, is prevalent in Delhi. Experts are calling for more genome sequencing to confirm if other variants have made an appearance.
