New Delhi: Immuno-compromised patients should be proactively surveyed for early identification of potential chronic infection, scientists have warned following a report of a cancer patient remaining positive for Covid-19 for over 471 days.
The Connecticut resident, who first tested positive in November 2020, had mild upper respiratory symptoms that improved over time. However, tests continued to find the individual positive for the infection.
According to a study in medRxiv, an online platform which publishes pre-print articles on health sciences, by scientists from Yale School of Public Health who collected 30 swab samples from the patient between February 2021 and March 2022, i.e. day 79 to 471 of the diagnosis, measured the SARSCoV2 viral load using RT-PCR and performed genome sequencing on 30 nasal swab samples during the period, the individual was infectious with high virus copies for almost the entire duration of the infection.
