COLOUR ME HAPPY!

Teaching colours to your preschooler can be an activity that is interesting, fun, full of laughs and totally frustrating all at once. M&B shows you how to make it easy-peasy...
COLOUR ME HAPPY!

The idea is to grab his attention and keep it on a certain track which in itself is a near-impossible task. So to start with, one must know the mantra to attract a toddler’s attention, which is “make it large”. At this age, they aren’t ready to handle multiple pieces of information, read the finer print and process complicated instructions. So, keep everything simple to attract and hold his attention.

Start with the primary colours like red, blue and yellow and slowly graduate to shades like mauve, mustard and grey. Always remember too much too soon will only make the task more difficult. Initially, the child may stare at you and show no comprehension of things being told or taught to him. Remember, this is his way of having fun. He does listen and he does learn. One day, like a key unlocking a stubborn lock, he will say to you, “Mama, red colour!” So make efforts in a way that interests him. Never try to push the child because, one way or another, he’ll know colours by the age when they really start mattering in his life.

STUFF YOU’LL NEED...

Books

While choosing a colour book, ensure that each page in the book is dedicated to only one colour. Too many items on the same page with different colours will only confuse the child. Secondly, the colours should be genuine. A mum once made the mistake of buying a book where the red colour depicted was very close to orange and her child was confused between orange and red for a number of years.
