You are going grocery shopping and your little one catches sight of a cupcake stall filled with colourful cupcakes in pretty pinks, cherry reds, brilliant blues and fast greens. The cakes look so attractive and mouth-watering that we adults too want to buy a couple for ourselves and gorge on them. So, when your little one asks you if she could have one, you may say no, then negotiate a little and ultimately buy her one. Then, your child spots some packets of chips at the store and insists that you buy a couple of packets for the drive home and for packed snack for school. You indulge your child.
You also pick up a few packs of biscuits, squash/juice powders and quick-fix soups and snacks. We are all busy parents who juggle our various roles and responsibilities and so, quick-fixes are life-saving and indispensable for all of us. When there are children at home, especially ones over 10 years of age, fast food becomes a regular part of the weekly diet with at least one pizza or burger or some other kind of fast food along with a side of French fries and a glass of some cola or fizzy drink.
If you look at all this cumulatively, the consumption of unhealthy, junk and processed foods goes up immensely. Our children are consuming much more white sugar, artificial flavours, artificial colours, chemicals and additives in a year than we would have consumed in our entire childhood!
