If you’re seeking a country home with all the advantages of a new-build plus character features, a barn conversion could be the ideal solution. Add to that versatile open-plan living areas with dramatic high ceilings and you get a home that works for modern living but also has the wow factor.
If you’re looking for a move-into property, you’ll have plenty of choice across France. In many rural areas, agricultural buildings feature the attractive local stone, adding to their appeal, while in mountain areas timber barns are also common.
For those keen on a project, there are thousands of barns dotted across the French countryside, often available at bargain basement prices. It’s not for the fainthearted though as these rural buildings were never intended for occupation by anything other than farm animals or for storage. They’re unlikely to have foundations, electricity, running water or sanitation. They were probably cheaply built and many have been left to fall into disrepair, with roofs and walls fallen in.
Inevitably, those in the best positions, with the best views, will have been snapped up and renovated long ago. That said, there are still many options for those looking for a project.
One of the great advantages of a barn project is they represent a real blank canvas. From window and door openings to balconies, mezzanine floors, double-height ceilings and exposed timberwork, you really have the chance to let your creative juices flow (within planning confines, of course). You could even make a feature of original fixtures like mangers.
