Nature's finest

Generally, when you hear the word ‘Chartreuse’ thoughts lead to the well-known aromatic green liqueur, popular as the key component to many delicious cocktail recipes.

Indeed, some will also think of the vibrant shade of green called chartreuse, which was named due to its resemblance to this refreshing French beverage. A concoction of 130 different herbs, flowers and spices are mixed to create this alcoholic drink, which has been a well-kept secret by the Carthusian monks since 1737. As this world-renowned order of monks is one of solitude and silence, you may not be surprised to discover that only two living monks from the Chartreuse region have the key to this clandestine recipe.

It is believed, to this day, that the medicinal properties of the plants used in the recipe have superpowers and cure most illnesses, which is perhaps why locals in the area still always keep a small bottle in their kitchen cupboard.

The religious order of the Carthusian monks originated from the Chartreuse Mountains and its impressive monastery is home to a select group of Christian monks who made a strict vow of separation from the affairs of the world in order to seek peace and a place for prayer. The monastery is hidden among the tall forest pines and imposing mountain cliff-faces of the French Alps, ensuring the ideal spot for solitude and quiet.
