And yet, our eyes are limited. There is a world beyond the world we see – the transcendent world. A world where Divine Love is all in all. This world can only be seen by the sight of the heart, by the vision that sees beyond the illusory world and glimpses the transcendent reality. A few great souls are born who have the vision of the heart, and who reflect this vision across time and space, through poetry and song. Such was Sant Surdas.
In a poor household near Mathura, in the 15th century, was born a son. Sadly, he was born blind, He was mistreated by his own family members, and bullied by other children. For Deepawali, his mother bought new clothes for his brothers, and none for him, saying that anyhow a blind child would not know the difference between old and new clothes.
One day, the blind boy was sitting on the porch outside his house. A group of singers passed by, singing the glories of Lord Krishna. Surdas was entranced and determined to become a singer. However, when he joined his brothers to learn from their father, his father drove him away, saying a blind boy cannot learn anything.
