With Geraint Thomas leading Sky’s Giro squad, and Chris Froome aiming at a Tour-Vuelta double, British fans are in for a treat this year.
Giro d’Italia
May 5-28
What’s it like?
It should be electric from the off, with a summit finish on Mount Etna coming as early as stage four. A hill-heavy route travels north from the toe of Italy’s boot until it reaches the Alps and Dolomites for a flurry of big mountain stages before a final-day time trial.
What’s different?
This is the Giro’s 100th edition, celebrated with the inclusion of some of Italy’s moststoried climbs. From Blockhaus (stage nine), an Alpine queen stage triple of Mortirolo, Stelvio and Umbrail (stage 16) to the Pordoi and Gardena in the Dolomites (stage 18) the race traces the wheel marks of legends. A compelling final-day chrono runs from the Monza racetrack to the cathedral in Milan. Expect a fast finish on the downhill run-in.
