Team Sky duo refine Grand Tour strategy
Geraint Thomas took on Nairo Quintana in central Italy last week at Tirreno-Adriatico, and with the Giro d’Italia on the horizon, he said that the first test of his leadership partnership with Mikel Landa went well.
Thomas and Landa will lead Sky’s Giro team this May (5-28). For the first time in 2017, they raced together in Tirreno-Adriatico, with Thomas winning a stage.
“Landa’s been really good here and he’s helped me out when I’ve been feeling a bit better, and I’m sure, if it’s the other way around, I’ll give him a hand,” Thomas told CW.
“It’s being honest with each other. I think in the Giro, a similar thing will happen. It’ll sort itself out and we’ll commit to whoever’s best because that last week is just savage.”
Cycling is filled with stories when dual leadership ends in disaster. Sky led with Bradley Wiggins in the 2012 Tour de France, but tension with rising star Chris Froome filled the headlines.
