LOOKING GOOD FOR LUCA

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: TONY CONNELLY

LUCA Connell was delighted to see fellow Republic of Ireland internationalist Shane Duffy complete his move to Celtic last week. The young midfielder recalled how Duffy took him under his wing when he was first called up to the Ireland squad and he is optimistic the guidance he has received from experienced players like Duffy can help him edge closer to becoming a regular in the Hoops.

It’s been a little over a year since Connell signed for Celtic. The young midfielder had enjoyed an excellent season in the Bolton first team and his performances caught the attention of a number of potential suitors.

Connell said the decision-making process was finalised as soon as he knew Celtic were interested. Not that he needed any convincing, but Duffy and other Republic of Ireland international players made sure the teenager knew how exciting a move it could be for him.

“Just before I signed for Celtic the lads in the Ireland squad were telling me how big an opportunity that could be for me,” said Connell in an exclusive interview with the Celtic View. “I had a few options around then but when I heard Celtic wanted me, the decision was easy. The lads there were telling me all about the history and just how big the club is. It was perfect timing to be away with Ireland and then go to Celtic.”

Duffy will reunite with Connell, and meet the rest of the Celtic squad, this week following the international break. The 28-year-old defender captained Ireland in their Nations League game away against Bulgaria last Thursday and emerged as the scoring hero when he headed in an injury-time goal for Ireland to rescue a 1-1 draw.
