Joe Root will be the first to admit that his team have not really performed to the caliber expected of them. If anything, the England captain is as much responsible for England’s woeful top order batting as much as anyone else. Yet England managed to win the series because India failed to stay competitive in the crucial moments of the match.
It would not be wrong to assess that the five-Test series against England could have well been in India’s bag. Having said that, the fact of the matter is that England now have an assailable 3-1 lead heading into the fifth and final Test and India can only lick their wounds as far as missed opportunities, critical errors in team selection and dismal passages of play are concerned. A 3-2 result is not going to serve as a balm in a series where the Indian cricket team must take responsibility for their own unforced, costly errors that let a golden opportunity slip past them.
