Ravi Shastri, the Indian coach, recently indicated that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former Indian captain, could well call time out on his one-day international career. Whether it is pure speculation on his part or divulging of information about the absentee player is beside the point. His suggestion that the former captain could make a place for himself in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup by his playing the Indian Premier League seems blatantly unfair.
Dhoni has repeatedly chosen to stay away from the game after his dubious turn at the ICC Cricket World Cup in England last year. For a player who no longer plays the long format, at thirty-eight years of age, it was expected that Dhoni would turn up at every limited-overs tournament that India played in if his intention was to extend his career.
