A brilliant Mohammed Shami yorker cleaned out the West Indian powerhouse for just three at the end of the 17th over on Wednesday but Kings XI only had three, rather than the requisite four, fielders inside the 30-yard circle meaning the umpire called a no-ball and Russell earned a second life.
He took full advantage, plundering 45 off his next 12 deliveries to move the Knight Riders to their highest IPL score at Eden Gardens, 218-4, and then took 2-21 with the ball – including the all-important wicket of Chris Gayle after the ‘Universe Boss’ top-edged to the infield on 20 – to secure a 28-run triumph.
You want to make a name for yourself early in your IPL career but this probably wasn’t what Hardus Viljoen or Varun Chakravarthy had in mind – with it emerging that one of Kings XI’s two debutants, although it’s unclear which, was the fielder caught outside the circle.
