Richard Dore takes a look at the Cheshire League champions with a line in titles and famous former West Indies players
If you asked any premier division side to name the greatest cricketer to ever play for them then surely most would be happy to provide Sir Curtly Ambrose’s name in response?
Chester Boughton Hall CC, formed in 1873, can provide such an answer having enjoyed a season with Ambrose in the side in 1986. This was two seasons before 6ft 7in Ambrose made his debut for the West Indies and, astonishingly, rival club Oxton also had the chance to select Ambrose that year, opting for David Cumberbatch instead.
Chester Boughton Hall had already enjoyed playing with another West Indian great, Winston Benjamin, the season before and according to longtime club member Jim Law, Ambrose took a bit of time to settle in.
“A local businessman called Geoff Moss had connections in the West Indies and he arranged for them to come over,” explained Law. “Sir Curtly, as he is now, is described by Chris Fleet, our club captain, as the greatest player ever to play here.
“Chris tells a story of our cricket nets once being at the bottom of the ground and Curtly pitched up with a number of sweaters on during a cold April day.
