Fans heading to Grace Road on Wednesday evening wouldn’t have expected to see a world record and certainly couldn’t have dreamed it would come from the arm of Colin Ackermann.
The self-titled ‘batting allrounder’ had a fairly uninspiring record of 31 wickets from 90 T20 matches heading into Leicestershire’s clash with Birmingham Bears, yet promptly achieved something no other cricketer in history had.
More than 30 bowlers had taken six-fers in a T20 clash but until Ackermann’s 7-18, no-one had claimed seven scalps in an innings.
Remarkably, the Foxes skipper only had one victim in his first two overs – Michael Burgess being brilliantly caught by Harry Dearden at short extra cover – but three men fell in his third over as Will Rhodes was bowled, Liam Banks served up a return catch and Alex Thomson was then castled.
A trio of further scalps were claimed in the 28-year-old’s last over with Sam Hain (61) caught at long-on, Henry Brookes clean bowled and Jeetan Patel then also caught at long-on off the final ball.
The Bears were ultimately skittled for 134 to suffer a 55-run defeat, after Harry Swindells (63) and Lewis Hill (58) had paced the hosts to 189-6, and Ackermann was left to reflect on a truly unbelievable feat, in every sense of the word.
“I’d never have believed this in a million years – I count myself as a batting all-rounder,” admitted the slightly bemused South African.
