THE TWO division structure of the County Championship will be a primary focus of the new working group set up by the ECB to give fresh thought to the direction of the county game.
Working group chairman Wasim Khan said there was growing debate about whether two divisions ‘really works’.
“Questions are increasingly being asked about what sort of behaviours the current structure creates,” he told TCP. “We’re seeing a lot of short-termism regarding decision-making, and a lot of good young players leaving counties in pursuit of Division One cricket. A lot has been spoken about so called ‘conferences’, or groups, and that will be very much up for debate.
“Also, what goes on during the six weeks of the new competition. Should there be county cricket during that period? Perhaps the 50-over competition should be played then, and include the Minor Counties in a cup-tie system?
