SHAHEEN Afridi shattered records galore at Lord’s but Pakistan’s bid for a miracle fell short to bring their World Cup to an early end.
Dreams of the impossible proved exactly that as Pakistan missed out on the semi-finals by net-run rate, their 315-9 total meaning Bangladesh needed just seven runs to knock them out.
A 94-run win provided an acceptable consolation, however, with young batsmen Babar Azam (96) and Imam-UlHaq (100) showing just how prosperous their future could be.
But one talented teenager stood head and shoulders above the rest.
Shaheen is only 19 but his talent in 50-over cricket is clear, outfoxing Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan en route to a stunning 6-35 that earned his place on the Lord’s honours board.
The records did not stop there, Shaheen boasting the first six-for of the World Cup, also becoming the youngest player of all time to bag five in a tournament innings.
But most significantly for a man following in the footsteps of greats came the best figures for Pakistan in World Cup cricket.
Not even Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis can boast that.
Whatever the future for Pakistan cricket, he’s surely going to be part of the story.
“I’m so happy with my performance and taking six wickets is incredible,” said Shaheen.
“It means so much to have this record when you think of all the legends of Pakistan cricket.
